Kanye West's most formidable enemy has always been himself, which makes the fact that his new album, Graduation (Island Def Jam), has smashed a sales record he previously held all the more poetic. According to Soundscan figures, West's third LP pushed 956,936 units in its first week, the highest selling debut since his 2005 release, Late Registration. Fueled by lead single "Stronger," it also recorded 132,000 digital downloads, surpassing Maroon 5 for the one-week digital- sales high mark.
Aside from being the biggest-ever debut for Island Def Jam, Graduation also opened at number one in the UK, Japan and Canada. The much anticipated battle between West and 50 Cent's Curtis, released the same week, never even approached entertaining, as 50 hit merely 691,000 copies moved.
